What lessons can focus on
The course combines performance, directing, design and research. HL adds an individual theatre piece: students apply a theatre theorist's work to a 4–7 minute solo performance. The production proposal develops a directing and design concept for a published play.

Frequently asked questions
How do HL and SL Theatre differ?
HL includes an individual theatre piece worth 35% of the HL grade. Students research a theatre theorist they have not studied and apply the theory in a 4–7 minute solo performance.
What is the production proposal?
Students develop a directing and design concept for a published play they have not studied, explaining how performance and production elements would realise their intentions. The proposal is not staged.
What is the research presentation?
Students independently research an unfamiliar theatre tradition, focus on one performance convention and present their findings.
Can I study Theatre without performance experience?
Yes. The course includes performance, directing, design and research, and practice can be planned around the student's experience.
