What lessons can focus on
Japanese B is for students with some prior experience. ab initio is designed for beginners and is offered at SL only. Language B assessment includes writing, listening and reading, and an individual oral; the student's school confirms the appropriate course placement.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose Japanese B or ab initio?
ab initio is intended for beginners and is available at SL only. Students with prior study and some existing proficiency usually take Japanese B. Follow the school's placement guidance.
Is ab initio only available at SL?
Yes. The ab initio course is offered at Standard Level only.
What happens in the Japanese B individual oral?
At SL, the oral begins from visual material. At HL, it begins with an extract from a literary work, followed by a conversation with the teacher.
How is Japanese B assessed?
Paper 1 writing contributes 25%, Paper 2 listening and reading 50%, and the individual oral 25%. The revised Language B course is scheduled for first examination in May 2029; the assessment structure remains the same.
